How to Calculate Bathroom Tiles required for Installation

If you plan on repairing the bathroom and choosing ceramic tile as the finish, you need to know how much material you need. Otherwise, you may spend more, when you urgently need to buy more tiles, but it may no longer be for sale, or you may simply be paying too much for extra material.

To avoid this, you need to calculate the exact number of tiles, but to make the calculation, you need to find out the area of the bathroom first. Let’s see how to do it.

When planning a repair, it is important to calculate the area accurately.

Where to start?

The first step is to find out the size of the room. To take measurements and calculate the area of the bathroom, we need a minimum set of tools that are present in each house:

– a piece of paper;
– pen or pencil;
– roulette wheel;
– calculator.

Before proceeding with measurements, it is necessary to draw a sketch of the bathroom on paper so that it is easier to record the results and make a calculation. For maximum convenience, mark each wall in the figure (for example, a wall with a door, with a sink, etc.) and don’t forget the floor.

For comfortable work, try to remove all unnecessary from the floor and walls to work freely in the entire perimeter of the room.
An example of a detailed sketch: a scan of the walls showing the location of the sanitary facilities and the layout of the tiles

Take measurements

So let’s move on to the measurements. Using a tape measure, first measure the width and length of the room, and then the height of the walls. Measure the width and height of the doorway and other objects that are not tiled. For example, some people prefer not to lay the tiles behind the bathroom or leave an uncoated surface behind the cabinet.

All data received is recorded on paper. Measurements should take into account possible irregularities in the room. Therefore, to avoid inaccuracies in the calculations, it is recommended to take measurements on each side and check the values at different points.

Settlements

Suppose if the length of the room is 2.2 m, the width is 1.8 meter, and the height of the walls is 2.8 m. By multiplying the length and width, we get the floor space in the bathroom:

2.2 x 1.8 =3.96 Sq. meter
In the same way, we determine the area of the doorway, multiply the height by width:

2 x 0.6 = 1.2 Sq. meter
Then we calculate the area of all walls. Initially, we do the calculation of the perimeter of the room:

2.2 + 2.2 + 1.8 + 1.8 = 8 m
Then subtract the door opening from the value obtained:
To get started tile calculator, select the collection we will be counting on and go to the homepage. This is how it looks for the karaoke collection, for example.

The whole calculation consists of 4 main steps.

Step one: Determine the purpose of the tile and the size of the walls for calculation.
In the vertical column, set the height of the ceiling and walls. In our example, we will calculate for a bathroom with a ceiling height of 2.7 m, two walls with a length of 2.5, and two, the width of which is 1.7 m. Until we subtract the dimensions of the doors – this can be done later.

It is convenient that the formats can be entered in two ways: manually or by moving the ruler from the ruler to the desired indicator.

Are you sure that all the required fields have been completed? Great, you can go to the next step.

By the way, if you want to calculate the tiles for fewer walls, for example, for two, you can remove unnecessary walls. To do this, set the cursor to the value of the redundant wall and select the button “remove the wall.”

It is located in the right corner, below the rulers. If we suddenly change our mind and decide to add a wall to our calculation, click the blue “Add Wall” button on the left.

Step two: tile layout
On the left tile calculator, we see the range of the collection: main tiles and decors. On the right, which is wider and larger than on the left, our walls are displayed according to the previously set parameters.

We will take turns “walling” the walls and selecting them from the list below: wall # 1, wall # 2, and so on.

For the first wall, choose a beige tile that we want to arrange in horizontal rows. To do this, drag the desired tile with the left mouse button to our wall.

Note that in order for the tile to fill a certain space, we need to bring it to the “Arrange in rows” item. If we simply drag the tile against the wall, it will lie as a single element. It is useful for decors, but not suitable for a large area.
The location of our tiles can be horizontal or vertical. If we want to add a contrasting strip, select the desired color on the left again and explain the desired area with the option “Arrange tiles in rows.”

Once the entire wall has been laid, you can place decors. We have selected a whole range of decors, again with the item ‘Arrange tiles in rows.’
The article placed incorrectly? It does not matter. We will use the eraser. It is located in the bottom left corner of the wall. We grab it with the mouse, drag it to where the mistake was made – and the failed element has already been removed.

Step three: Save (doors, bath, etc. Subtract)
Now you need to select areas free from tiles. This should be done on a specific wall, from the ones we already ‘confronted’ by selecting them from the list.
First, the door. The exact dimensions can be set manually or by moving the sliders on the rulers. The selected area is reflected on our wall.

Second, you can specify any area. For example, we decided not to tile the space behind the bathroom. Then select the desired wall and mark on it the area that we will free from the tile. Custom areas can be added or removed in the calculator as desired. It is very useful.

All noted? Then go to the fourth step.

Step four: final statement
At the exit, we get a full tile layout in accordance with our design ambitions, the size of our property, and selected random areas.

The name of the tile, price, footage, stock (if it is necessary, for example, it will not be included in the sets), the total amount will be indicated. The stock can be reduced, enlarged, or completely removed.

Under the calculation, we see our layout of the tiles on the walls, as we intended.
The completed calculation can be sent to your email, saved in bookmarks, or here you can place an order with the appropriate button.
One of the main repair problems is the correct calculation of the material, especially when it comes to calculating the number of tiles. And if another finishing material is not difficult to buy, then in the case of tiles, this possibility may not exist.

It is worth noting immediately that the correct calculation of tiles is an opportunity to protect yourself not only from buying excess material but also from a more serious problem related to the lack of tiles. The problem is that modern tile production is quite complex and, so to speak, an intermittent process, which is why tiles from the same collection in different batches have significant differences in color scheme, ornament geometry, and other technical parameters. You don’t need to be an expert to understand how this will affect the design of the entire interior.

It is also worth noting that the lack of experience in taking measurements and calculating the area of the building often leads to incorrect calculations, this problem should not be taken any less seriously.

Unfortunately, there is no single and unchanged formula for calculating tiles, because in each case, it all depends on several factors: the size and characteristics of the layout of the room, the dimensions of the tile, and the layout option. But in general, the calculation schemes will be similar, and you can understand them using a simple example. In this case, the average dimensions of the room and the material are taken as the basis.

The dimensions of the bathroom are 1.73 × 1.73 m, with a ceiling height of 2.6 m. There are no baskets or niches in the bathroom, and the openings only the door.
